Properly Removing Makeup

image Always remove your makeup properly before you goto bed at night! Leaving your make-up on can lead to eye infections and breakouts because your skin can't breathe correctly. At night, the skin goes through a natural regeneration process, so unremoved make-up can disrupt this. The best way to remove make-up is by using a cleanser; which helps loosen the make-up from your face and will leave your skin feeling fresh and able to breathe. Although many women opt for facial wipes / baby wipes, cleansers chosen as per skin type are the best option. Facial wipes are good for oily skin types and for light makeup removal. For heavy makeup removal as well as a thorough cleansing of the base makeup, facial wipes are insufficient. Baby wipes should not be used as our skin requires a much stronger formula to cleanse and remove dirt, grime and makeup. A cleanser can be used with a warm washcloth or damp cotton pads. Avoid stretching and harsh rubbing on face as this will dry your face further and may cause swelling. The eye area needs specially formulated eye makeup removers as this area is very delicate and the eye makeup especially the mascara is not removed easily with ordinary cleansers.

Types Of Makeup Removers:
Different formulations are available in the market for removing makeup, which is as important as applying makeup. Cleansers, oils, facial makeup removers, eye makeup removers, natural makeup removers and so on. Choose the one which suits your skin type and remove makeup properly before going to bed, no matter howtired you are, so that you wake up with a glowing complexion next morning.

1. Cleansers:Cleansers come in various consistencies - you may prefer a facial wash, to be used with warm water; and a flannel. These are good for oily skin but don't always deliver on removing eye make-up. A cleansing milk is a light, cream formula, great for younf skin and should be applied to the face like a moisturiser and then gently tissued off or swept away with a cotton pad. Cleansing creams or balms have a thicker consistency, and are good for drier skin types. They are also better at dissolving eye-makeup, although a specialised eye make-up remover is best to avoid stinging. However, avoid those products containg alcohol, as they might damage the skin in longer term.
Using A Cleanser As A Makeup Remover:

  • Step 1: Choose a light cream or liquid cleanser that suits your skin and spread it all over your face and neck.
  • Step 2: Rub the cleanser well into your face but try not to drag the skin. Smooth it in with your fingertips, always using upward movements.
  • Step 3: To remove the cleanser, gently wipe your face with a paper tissue, taking care not to rub your skin too harshly.
  • Step 4: Splash your face with cold water to remove the cleanser and make-up.

Mineral oils such as baby oils are the cheapest way of removing makeup. Olive oils are not only good makeup removers, they condition the skin and also are effective eye make-up removers. Almond oils, rich in vitamin E, are also effective as makeup removers. Oil-based makeup remover with hydrating properties are usually beneficial to people with dry skin types. Apply oil with your finger tips in a circular motion, remove with a damp cotton pad. You can apply a pack made of ground chickpea flour made into a paste with a few drops of lemon juice for oily skin or warm milk for dry normal and sensitive skin. Apply using fingertips using circular and upward movements and wash off with warm water when it feels dry.
3. Makeup Remover Towelettes:
An easy, option for those on the go, towelettes remove facial makeup effectively as they come with cleansing formulas. But buy brand names you trust and use. There are towelettes which come especially for removing eye makeup. They are ultra soft and designed for the delicate skin of the eye area. However it is necessary to moisturise the entire face after your makeup removal and wash.
4. Natural Make-Up Removers:
People with sensitive skin, or those who have an allergy towards market products can easily make their own natural makeup removers at home with ingredients easily available in the kitchen. Olive oil and almond oil are good natural makeup removers with moisturising properties. However, milk is the best natural makeup remover. The following home-made makeup removers can be used as per skin type:

imageHome-made Natural Makeup Removers:
i. Olive oil/Baby Oil Remover: Mix equal quantities of olive oil and baby oil and use as a makeup remover. This is effective for removing eye makeup also.
ii. Cucumber Remover: Mix 100 ml fresh cucumber with soap nut (mixed with 10 ml water) and apply on face. It removes make-up, cleans as well as tones the skin while soothing damaged skin.
iii. Aloe-vera Remover: Mix 20g aloe-vera and fresh cucumber juice and apply on the face gently. It not only removes make-up, but daily use protects facial skin from dirt, grime and pollution.

5. Eye Makeup Removers:
Ordinary cleansers aren't usually sufficient to remove stubborn eye make-up, which is why those special products are so useful. If you wear waterproof mascara you will probably need to check that the cleanser you use is designed to remove it. Always treat the area around the eyes with great care when cleansing, as the skin tissue in this area is particularly sensitive. Avoid stretching and harsh rubbing of the skin, which could result in irritation and swelling. To apply eye make-up remover, simply dab the liquid or cream onto a cotton ball and gently wipe around the eye area. Don't apply it directly to your eye and the remove it, as you will end up with greasy, sticky eyes.
