How To Carve Your Thanksgiving Turkey? Thanksgiving dinner time main activity is carving the turkey perfectly and eating it. Here is a step by step guide on how to carve the turkey and serve it to your guests.
Remove the cooked turkey from the oven and place on a clean tray. Check to see if well cooked. You could do so by pulling a leg. If the juices run clear, then its an indication that the meat is well-cooked.- Allow the turkey to stand for 12-15 minutes or maybe longer.
- Use a sharp, about 2inches long bladed knife to carve neat slices. Avoid using serrated knives or choppers. Use a short carving fork with curved prongs to hold the turkey in place while carving it.
- Warm the serving platter so that the meat served retains its heat.
- To ensure tender slices while carving carve along the grain of the meat.
- Remove any string or foil before carving.
- From the neck-end of the turkey's breast, remove the skin first and feel into the cavity for a v-shaped wish bone. Cut neatly around the wishbone and extract carefully, not to break it. Clean and allow it to dry and make a wish. Two people hold the wishbone and make a wish. Then they pull it apart, and whoever gets the longer piece has their wish come true as per tradition.
- Carve the legs by cutting along the hip joint, and separating the leg slowly from the body. There is a succulent orb of meat near the base of the back called oyster. Cut leg at knee joint. Slice the thigh meat parallel to the bone. Repeat with the other leg.
- Next step is to carve the breasts using the traditional kitchen method. Cut alongside its breastbone, cutting away from the carcass, through the wing joint. The breast will come away from the body. Repeat on the other side as well. Cut off the wings section of breast. Slice the remaining meat against the grain.
Heap onto serving plates. Scoop out the stuffing and serve alongside.- Carve only how much is necessary, as meat stays better if uncut. You can cut later when a second helping is required.
- Do not throw away the bones. They may be used for your turkey soup.
