Chinese New Year Table Decoration Ideas: The Chinese art of carving is recognized as easy to learn. There is a difference between storage of vegetables and the storage of fruit.
Vegetables: Hard vegetables should be placed in cold water immediately after carving, and they should be kept refrigerated. If stored for longer periods, the water should be changed daily. Cover or wrap large show pieces with a wet cloth and keep them refrigerated. Soft vegetables, such as tomatoes, are difficult to store. Therefore, they should be as freshly carved as possible. If necessary, cover them with cling film and store them in the refrigerator. Fruits: Fruit carved while still green can be stored for longer periods of time. When finished, immediately spray the carved objects with keep-fresh-spray. Either place them in a container with a lid or wrap them in cling film. Fruit that have been sprayed with keep-fresh-spray will no longer turn brown. If they are kept vacuum-packed in the refrigerator, they will still look freshly carved a few days later. 1. Cucumber Frog:
The Frog King is enjoyed by children and adults alike and will be a hit at parties, as both a fun decoration and an inventive accessory. Tools and materials: knife, chisel, ribbed chisel, toothpick, peppercorns.
- Cut two pieces of the cucumber at an angle, with the end slightly larger than the other.
- Place the second cucumber piece upright and cut off a semi circular segment from both sides. Cut one a bit smaller for the hind legs and the other one slightly bigger for the front legs.
- Place the two semi circular pieces of the cucumber on the chopping board, with the large cut surfaces face down. Now make four thin slices, starting the cut just a few millimeters below the upper edge to keep the parts joined. On the fifth cut, slice completely through. Do this with both the smaller and larger cucumber pieces, two times each.
- Take the end pieces of the cucumber, place it down, and cut out a wedge on the head for the mouth.
- Make an incision with a medium sized round chisel at the top and make two circular holes for eye sockets.
Indicate the chest at the bottom by thinly peeling with a knife.- For the tongue, slice a carrot and cut the slice in half again.
- Cut two circular pieces of a carrot with a medium sized round chisel, and place them into the eye sockets as eyes. Use peppercorns for the pupils. Insert the tongue.
- Cut a slice of stem cabbage, approximately 1.5 cm thick, to use as the base. Make an incision all the way around using a larger ribbed chisel with the rounded part facing the outside.
- Place the feet on the base.
- Make a flat cut at the bottom of the frog’s body to keep it well balanced at the base. It can be fixed to the base with a toothpick.
