Origin Of Father's Day:

Father’s Day is a day honoring fathers, celebrated on the third Sunday of June in 52 of the world's countries and on other days elsewhere. It complements Mother's Day, the celebration honoring mothers. It is said that the custom of honoring dad's on a special day is over 4,000 years old. It is also claimed that the tradition of celebrating Father's Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. A record is made of a young boy called Elmesu had carved a Father's Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. Elmesu wished for his Babylonian father’s good health and long life. It is not known what happened to father and son but the tradition of celebrating Father's Day remained in several countries all over the world.

Any man can be a father but it takes something special to be a dad. The idea for creating a special day for children to honor their fathers first began in Spokane, Washington. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for celebrating Father's Day while her mother was giving a sermon way back in 1909. Her devoted father’s loving daughter, she thought if there is a special day to honor mothers, then why is there no special day to honor fathers too for they take care of the children too, nurture them and love them. That question left a deep lasting impression on her mind and then she made up her mind to get fathers their due respect in society. She was raised by a single parent by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died; Sonora really wanted her father to know how happy she was to have someone as special as her Father and how much he meant to her. He had made all the parental sacrifices and in her eyes he was a courageous, selfless, and loving man. She wanted Father’s Day to be celebrated on the 5th o f June which was her father’s birthday, but it did not happen that way as there was not enough time for preparation so the celebrations were deferred to June 19, the third Sunday of June. As it was her father’s birthday in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. Her campaign became a success and people started accepting the need to recognize a father’s role played in raising a child. Soon the day came to be celebrated in several cities across US. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd died in 1978, she was 96 years of age. She was recognized as the one who gave father's their due recognition, Sonora gained appreciation for her hard work and efforts and she wrote a children’s book on the Native Americans of Spokane. To remember her important contribution to society, a monument was constructed at YMCA, Spokane. But this special day is not celebrated the same day all over the world. There are different dates for father’s date all around the world. This year Father’s Day Calendar features Father’s Day Date in countries around the world.
