Halloween Pumpkin Carving:
Pumpkin carving is one of the main customs of Halloween. Typical Jack-O-Lanterns with many designs are common in every household. When you outgrow the childhood years you wish to explore more and carve out new designs on pumpkins during Halloween than the ordinary tooth-less or one-toothed grinnig faces and experimental eye patterns. Whatever the design, you have to first buy a pumpkin of the shape that you want. Popular patterns include favorite rock stars, Frankenstein, Jack Skellington and other Nightmare Before Christmas characters, Joker from Batman the Dark Knight, Sweeney Todd, Harry Potter, Edward Cullen & Bella Swan of Twilight, Yoda, Batman, SpongeBob SquarePants & Patrick, Elmo, Tigger, Scooby-Doo, Homer Simpson, Gollum from Lord of the Rings, Jack Sparrow, Shrek, Super Mario, Thomas the Tank Engine and spooky characters including ghosts, spiders, witches, bats, skull & crossbones, black cat, grim reaper and many more.

How To Carve:

Materials Required: Design stencil; water based marker; Tape, Knife; poking tool (available with pumpkin carving kits); battery-operated votive candle.
Method: Clean the pumpkin and dry. Carefully carve out the top half of the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds, strings and flesh. Resize your pumpkin stencil to fit your pumpkin. Transfer the pattern onto your pumpkin using poking tools. Remove the stencil. Start carving the smallest details first. Keep removing the cut shapes. Place the votive candle inside at the base of your pumpkin.

Pumpkin Carving Ideas:
1. Happy Jack: Happy Jack stencils are the easiest and the most common designs used on Halloween. You could differ by using different eye shapes, nose shapes, one-toothed grin two- or three-toothed grin. You could also carve several jack-o-lanterns using happy Jack, sinister Jack, Traditional Jack patterns, silly Jack patterns, or mischievous grin patterns. These are easily available in downloadable format.

3. Alien Pumpkin: Spooky outer alien faces can be carved by older children. This is an easy design, but be careful with the shape of the face.

4. Halloween Phrases: Phrases such as "Happy Halloween", "Welcome", "Ghoulish", "Eerie"," Zombies", "Eek", "Boo" are all common phrases that are used on pumpkins. However care should be taken to start carving from the middle outside.

5. Old Hag: Try a wicked witch stencil on your pumpkins this time. It should not be too scary if involving little children.

6. Horror Cat: If using the cat theme, you could use a cat face or a spiked cat pattern. A spiked cat is easier to make and requires less time, wheres a cat face might take more time, depending upon the detailing.

8. Skull and Cross Bones: This pattern includes a skull and cross bones which might be drawn behind, below, above the skull. Start by carving the skull of the pattern, eye sockets first and then the nose cavity and jawbone. Upon finishing this you can go ahead with the cross-bones.

9. Night Owl: Night owl is a popular pattern that can be transferred to the pumpkin. Although it takes a lot of time, the effect is worth the effort. There are many variations, a solitary owl pattern, or an owl sitting on a tree or in front of a full moon.
