Trick Or Treat Safety Guidelines: Halloween is a time for enjoyment, especially for children. The children enjoy fun activities and nourishing and tasty treats on this Harvest Day festival. To ensure that you and your children keep up with the spirit of Halloween and have a safe and fun time, follow these simple guidelines, and plan their activities in advance:
- Ensure that adults also accompany children on their trick-o-treat programs. As children may find it difficult to cross streets on their own at night, and might wander far off and get lost.
- Always instruct the children to accept sweets which are wrapped and not loose candies. Loose candies might carry germs and bacteria if left in the open for long.
- Ensure that your children pop the candies into their mouths straight from the wrappers and not mess with opened sweets with their dirty hands.
- Buy and make your children wear such costumes which will allow for free movement and not uncomfortable bulky costumes. Tuck the costume well so that the legs, feet, hands and faces are open for comfort.
Avoid going to unknown houses in the neighborhood, where unfriendly people reside. Some homeowners actively wish to participate in trick-o-treat programs. They decorate their patio and entrance way with jack-o-lanterns, lights and plastic skeletons, paper spider-webs etc. Some also leave candies in pots on the porch. Instruct your children to visit such houses.- Please keep a check on what your children are eating. If they drop their candy on the ground, ensure that they do not pick it up from the ground and pop it in their mouth.. it takes a second! So you have to be careful. So check all candies and treats before allowing the kids to eat.
- Plan the tricks before hand, they should not cause any physical harm to the elderly.. Guide your children in planning their tricks. Tricks should be idle threats that can be enjoyed as well.
- Ensure that your children do not eat all the candy that they have collected. Inculcate in them the spirit of sharing so that they do not fill their tummies with only candies and then skip dinner.
- Do not allow the children to carry any sharp object such as a ninja toys, swords, or a toy knife for a pirate costume, or a pointed stick or a broom for a witch costume. Pick kid-friendly and easy to carry props. Also avoid any elaborate face paint or makeup in children and they may get allergic reactions to them. Use only kid-friendly non-toxic products that the children are comfortable in.
- Ensure that each child has a flashlight or a glowing necklace or shoes which will make things visible to them on a dark Halloween night.
- Plan the houses that you and your children would visit in advance. It would be better to inform the homeowners and find out if they would like to participate.
- Pick costumes that are bath-room friendly, and also plan a bathroom and water break for your children in the route.
- Pick shoes that are comfortable for walking, sandals and princess heels are not meant for such outdoor programs.
- Pick masks which allow visibility and breathing.
- Keep goody bags handy for each kid, which can contain a flashlight, a hanky and a water bottle.
These would leave their hands free.- Make the children walk at an easy pace and not run as they will soon get exhausted. Keep them hydrated and stop if they are tired.
- Keep a track on the time. Ensure that your kids do not trick-or-treat anyone after 9 pm.
- Ensure that your children only visit homes that are lit, that too only go to the front door.
- Obey traffic rules and stay on the sidewalks. Do not walk through dark alleys and parking lots. go to places where there are lots of people around.
- If you think your children are old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult supervision, then it is best to go in huge numbers and stay in the group and not wander about alone.
- Do not go inside the house, stay outside with your group. If you need to freshen up, it is best to goto public bathrooms or any known house which your parents had pre-planned for you for a water-break.
- Say "no" to strangers. Do not accept any sweets or treats or candies from complete strangers.
- Make your kids wear costumes which make them visible in the dark, like bright stripes, glowing prints etc., so that it is easy for car drivers to spot them.
- Wear flame-resistant costumes and do not go too near lit candles or luminaries.
- Most importantly, stay safe and enjoy.
