Celebrating International Women's Day / Events:
Each year on 8 March, hundreds of International Women's Day events occur all around the world ranging from small random informal gatherings to large-scale highly organised events each celebrating women's advancement and highlghting the need for continued vigilance and action. The events differ from country to country. The Day is declared as an official holiday for women in many countries such as China, Russia, Vietnam, Georgia, Cuba, Armenia, Afghanistan etc. Other countries do not declare a holiday but Observe the day with many local events. The UK-based marketing company Aurora hosts a free worldwide register of IWD local events so that women and the media can learn about local activities. Many governments and organizations around the world support IWD. There is a map of IWD events available at this location, for women's groups around the world.

Different Events are held on IWD all across the globe to uphold the casue of women:

  • In USA, for example, there are house parties to support women's rights around the world on International Women's Day for the Global Fund for Women!
  • There are further conferences organized by CARE which is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. Here special focus is given on working alongside the poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty.
  • Other programs on IWD include a diverse collection of speakers and performing groups from around different University campuses celebrating the accomplishments of women.
  • image On IWD different workshops, and trade fairs are also organized by nonprofit fair trade stores supporting women artisans in developing countries.
  • Peace Power Walks, rallies, marches are also common events held on IWD to promote for "Equality for All".
  • Expos on IWD involving entertainment, exhibit booths, demonstrations, workshops and celebration are also popular where all proceeds go to charity to help improve the lives of women and girls locally and internationally.
  • Exhibitions are common in the field of Women In science, engineering, technology and medicine, Art with a series of portraits take place.
  • In UK Glasgow Women’s Library had teamed up with the Workers Educational Association to offer sessions showcasing some real Firebrand Women and the campaigns that they worked on which have allowed us the rights that we have today.
  • On IWD talk shows on sex trafficking from a regional and global perspective are held to bring about more awareness.
  • Seminars for practitioners are also held on IWD that looks at how to identify and recognise the effects of economic abuse within a domestic abuse situation and looks at how to offer support to women.
  • Different Colleges hold workshops in UK, to provide free training to women who wish to start a business of their own.


Although started as a socio-political event, some countries have the tradition which sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts on IWD. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

image In Armenia, after the collapse of the Soviet Union celebrations of IWD were abandoned. Instead, April 7 was introduced as state holiday of ‘Beauty and Motherhood’. The new holiday immediately got popular among Armenians, as it commemorates one of the main holidays of the Armenian Church, the Annunciation. However, people still kept celebrating IWD on March 8 as well. Public discussion held on the topic of two ‘Women’s Days’ in Armenia resulted in the recognition of the so called ‘Women’s Month’ which is the period between March 8 and April 7.
In Italy, to celebrate the day, men give yellow mimosas to women. Yellow mimosas and chocolate are also one of the most common March 8 presents in Russia and Albania.
In many countries, such as In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia, the custom of giving women flowers still prevails. Women sometimes get gifts from their employers too. Schoolchildren often bring gifts for their teachers as well.
In countries like Portugal groups of women usually celebrate on the night of 8 March in "women-only" dinners and parties.
In India, IWD holds a lot of significance. Many celebrations are held during the day.
In Pakistan working women in formal and informal sectors celebrate International Women's Day every year to commemorate their ongoing struggle for due rights, despite facing many cultural and religious restrictions.
In Poland, for instance, every IWD includes large feminist demonstrations in major cities.
