Goals / Purpose Of International Women's Day: International Women's Day focuses on women related issues, it is a global day which brings women all over the world together discussing and taking steps and raising voices against injustice, commemorating achievements made by women in the past and still making in every field.
Initially started as a Socialist, political movement against the inequalities faced by women in the early 1900's when women industrial workers had to cope with worse work conditions, low wages, long working hours, no right to vote and other social injustices, IWD has come a long way. Today although injustice and inequality towards women and children also is a big issue, other issues such as violence towards women and children, Saving the girl child against sexual, emotional abuse, Equal rights to education and health, saving women and children in countries undergoing armed conflict are also discussed and campaigns conducted.
The benefits of women's full participation in economic, political, and social life are not being realized in many parts of the world. In all regions, women are less likely than men to receive pay commensurate to the value of their work, be given a voice in their national governments, or have access to basic human rights such as the right to an education.
Today the UN who had joined hands in support of IWD in 1945, also gives active support to women by holding large-scale events that honour women's advancement and while diligently reminding of the continued vigilance and action required to ensure that women's equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life. Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and through supporting external ones Different countries have different ways of observing IWD. In Phoenix, each year the celebration includes a fund raising event where money is raised through business donations to provide scholarships for women re-entering education.
This year the United Nations has chosen Gender Equality and the Millennium Development Goals as the focus of International Women's Day. In September 2000, at the United Nations Millennium Summit, the largest-ever gathering of world leaders - with 147 heads of State and Government and representatives from 189 nations in total - agreed to a groundbreaking set of time-bound and measurable goals and targets. The aim of the Millennium Development Goals, as they came to be known, is to achieve the following targets by 2015:
Goal 1: Halve extreme poverty and hunger- Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
- Goal 3: Empower women and promote equality between women and men
- Goal 4: Reduce under-five mortality by two thirds
- Goal 5: Reduce maternal mortality by three quarters
- Goal 6: Reverse the spread of diseases, especially HIV/AIDS and malaria
- Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
- Goal 8: Create a global partnership for development, with targets for aid, trade and debt relief
The goal of International Women's Day is for women next door and around the world to support, encourage and celebrate one another until women have that level of equality as men. As women, we should press on to achieve that goal when no girl child will be abused and there will be no women deaths due to rape and violence, when a girl can freely walk on the streets without being molested, and when a girl can work and demand the wage that she deserves and get all the priviledges that she should as a human being.
