Importance Of International Women's Day:
It is because of the active interest taken up by the ordinary women that today we have our voting rights, economic rights, social rights. IWD have also caused an awareness among women and is a support system for all women. We do not need to wait till, march 8th to celebrate IWD. So, each time you go to the polls or each day that you walk into a clean, safe, work environment, you can thank those who started the movement.
It is no longer a day set aside to “demand rights,” but a day set aside to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women. The IWD focus to work upon the Millennium goals that have been set by the UN by the year 2015.
International Women's Day reached a milestone in March 2010 when it marked its 100th anniversary. For 100 years International Women's Day celebrates the political, economic, cultural and social achievement of women around the world. Not only is IWD a celebration it also serves as reminder of the continuing struggle for equality that so many women face across the world. It is also about looking towards a future vision where all women are safe and free to live the life of their choosing. According the UN Development Fund for Women it is women who perform 66 per cent of work globally, women produce a full half of food globally, but earn 10 per cent of men and own 1 per cent of global property, therefore it is the duty of all to ensure that global equality is enjoyed by women as well.
It is therefore on IWD that women all over the globe can organize various events such as conferences, walks, charities, to improve women's conditions and eradicate mal-practices towards women and children. This is an ongoing movement which do not happen overnight. Over the years through awareness programs conducted on IWD and other movements there sure will be a day when women will be completely safe and have equality and justice. IWD Celebrations / Events |
