Here you'll find peaceful lakes bordered by palm trees, the rolling wooded hills of the Jura, the delightful green landscapes of the northern part of the canton and the snowy summits of the Alps with their majestic glaciers. Geneva is the second-most populous city in Switzerland (after Zürich) and is the most populous city of Romandy (the French-speaking part of Switzerland). Situated where the Rhône River exits Lake Geneva, it is the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva. Geneva is located at the south-western end of Lake Geneva, where the lake meets the Rhône River. It is surrounded by two mountain chains, the Alps and the Jura. Downhill skiing on the Alpine glaciers of the canton of Vaud, cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing across the Jura range, city life and sophisticated dining - all three worlds come together in the Lake Geneva region to make for a perfect holiday. Things To Do / See: A.Geneva City Sightseeing: Palais des Nations-European headquarters of the United Nations, the Palais des Nations is the second-largest complex in Europe after Versailles, and was originally built to house the League of Nations. Located to the north of the city centre, the palace features ancient trees against contemporary monuments and boasts a splendid Assembly Hall and a huge collection of public art. Like most European cities, Geneva has an Old Town sector where the streets get smaller and the buildings begin to cozy up against one another. Cafes and boutiques line the cobblestone streets leading to the Bourg-de-Four, Geneva's oldest public square known today as a very popular meeting spot. The seat of government in Geneva is located in the Old Town, the Hotel De Ville. The first Geneva Convention was held there in 1864 and the League on Nations was founded there in 1920.
