Valentine's Day Happy Valentine's Day(2008) From 101lifeStyle.com Valentine's Day Gift Ideas: 4.Valentine’s Day Gifts For Parents: Valentine’s Day gifts For Mother: i.Heart Shaped Treasure Box: Materials Needed: Small heart box; Paint; Paintbrushes; Newspaper to protect the table; Water and paper towels for cleanup; Glue; Sponge; Fabric, ribbons, ribbon roses, small fake flowers, eyelet or lace; Catalogs to cut pictures from, like flower catalogs; Valentines stickers; Small paper doilies; Method: This is a very open ended project, first you need to decide how you want to decorate your box. If you want to paint hearts and flowers on the box, you can give the outside of the box a coat of white or light pink paint. Let the paint dry, then paint your designs over it. You can also sponge paint on the box - give the box a coat of a base color, and allow that to dry. In the meantime, cut a piece of sponge into a shape, like a small heart. When the paint is dry, dip the sponge into another color of paint and stamp it on the box. The design will have some small holes in it, sort of lacy. You can probably stamp your design once more before dipping the sponge into the paint again. Experiment on a piece of scrap paper before stamping on your box. Young children might be happy just painting the box one color, or painting the box one color and then decorating it with stickers once the paint is dry. Instead of painting the box, you can cover it with a collage of pretty cutouts, like flowers - or even cut the flower cutouts into heart shapes before pasting them to the box. Don't forget that you can also decorate the inside of the box, too. ii.Valentine Placemats: Materials Needed: A variety of children's valentines; 11 x 17 inch colored construction paper (or tape together two 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheets); pen/pencil; scissors; glue; clear contact plastic (available in a craft store); Optional -- photo (duplicate or color photocopy) of you with person you're making the placemat for; Method: Choose from among the valentines and glue them onto a sheet of construction paper. You can also cut out pieces of the valentines to create a design. If you have a photo of you and "your valentine," integrate it into the design. For posterity's sake, add your name and date in the bottom, right corner of the placemat. Carefully place the placemat on the sticky side of the clear contact plastic. Place another sheet of clear contact plastic on the other side of the mat. Smooth out any wrinkles, and cut off the excess, leaving a narrow border of plastic. This makes the placement somewhat durable and wipeable. iii.Valentine Candles: Materials Needed: Wax Sheets; Clay Pot; Moss; Birthday Cake Candle Heart Shaped cookie cutters; Craft Stick; Floral foam; Stickers and paints for decoration; Candy hearts or glitter for decoration; Method: Cut out 6 hearts from the wax sheet. Place 3 hearts together and apply some pressure to melt together a little. Place the birthday candle in the center. It would work as a candle wick. Place the craft stick just below the candle bottom. Cover the candle and the stick with the other 3 hearts. It will appear like a sandwich of 3 hearts, candle, craft sticks and again 3 hearts. Place together to make stick. Apply a bright paint to the pot and decorate it with glitter and stickers. Place a floral foam at the bottom of the pot. Now push a craft stick into the foam to create an upright heart candle. Cover the floral foam with moss. Sprinkle some red glitter to give a romantic effect. iv.Fuzzy Flower: Materials Needed: Colorful yarn; scissors; chenille pipe cleaners (available in a craft store); 2-hole buttons in colors complementary to the yarn (holes should be big enough to slide a pipe cleaner through); Method: To make a flower, leave a 5 inch tail and start winding yarn around four fingers 20 times. When you've made the 20 loops, leave another tail at the end that's 5 inches long. Slip the loops off your fingers. Wind the two tails around the middle of the loops of yarn a couple of times and then tie them off, making a knot at the back. The loops of yarn become the petals of the flower. Take a pipe cleaner and poke it through one hole of a two-hole button. Bend the pipe cleaner and poke it back through the other hole of the button. You should now have a button with two, equal-length pipe cleaner tails. Slip the center of the loops of yarn between the pipe cleaner tails so that the two pipe cleaner tails and the two yarn tails are at the back of the flower and the button is on top of the flower. Twist the pipe cleaner tails once to secure the button to the center of the flower. Now twist/braid together the yarn tails and pipe cleaner tails to form a single stem for the flower. Fluff out the loops of yarn so that you have a fluffy flower around the button center. Note: These instructions make a small flower. To make a slightly larger flower, loop the yarn around something wider, like a child's entire hand (fingers and thumb), an adult hand, or a piece of cardboard. v.Heart Shaped Napkin Rings: Materials Needed: Red felt; Bright pink felt; Tulip glitter paint, optional; Scissors; Ruler, optional; Printable pattern below, optional; Method: Follow directions for cutting out your own. Adjust the length of rectangle according to the type of napkins you use. Cut a rectangle of red felt 1 3/4" x 10" long. Cut the ends of the rectangle into half hearts, as shown in the picture. Apply glitter paint along the side of each of the heart ends if desired. Let dry. Cut one heart out of red felt 2 3/4" x 3 1/2". Cut one heart out of bright pink felt 2 1/4" x 3 1/8". Apply glitter paint (optional) along the sides as shown in the picture. Let dry. Cut a slit in each heart vertically about 1 1/4" long. Insert one end of the napkin ring through both hearts (red on bottom). Insert the other end of the napkin ring through both pieces. Insert your napkin into the napkin ring. Place on your table and enjoy using your napkin rings! Tips: These napkin rings can be adapted for either paper, cloth, or fingertip towels.
