History: Sikandar Lodhi of the Lodhi dynasty, Delhi Sultanate, founded Modern Agra in the 16th century.Emperor Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri in Agra . Fatehpur Sikri remained his capital for around fifteen years after which the city was left deserted in mysterious circumstances.However Agra came to its own glory when Shahjahan when he built the Taj in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1653 AD. Agra can be explored using different modes of transport like taxi, tempo, auto-rickshaw and cycle rickshaw from the Taj Mahal area. Prepaid taxis and autos from the railway station are available. Prepaid transport is also available for excursions in and around the city limits. Bicycles can be hired on hourly basis from different parts of the city. It is to be remembered that no diesel or petrol vehicle are allowed to ply in the Taj Mahal area.
