Ancient City Of Athens

Introduction:
Athens is the capital of Greece, it is the largest Metropolis of Greece, and it is one of the oldest cities in the world, with a history that is dated back from 3400 years ago. Athens has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age. The periods that have been witnessed by Athens are the Neolithic Age, Early Bronze Age, Middle Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age, Dark Age, Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and the Modern Age. Athens is situated in the Attica Periphery which extends to the eastern part of Central Greece; the Attica periphery is a sub-division of Greece and it one of the official regional administrative divisions of Greece. Greece has 13 peripheries with 9 of them located on the mainland of Greece and the remaining 4 are island groups. The peripheries are divided into 54 prefectures and the prefectures are further sub - divided into 3 super prefectures. Prefectures are a second degree body of local self government but are not superior to the Communities and Municipalities of Greece. The Attica Periphery is subdivided into the Athens prefecture, Piraeus prefecture, East Attica prefecture, and West Attica prefecture. Athens is the most populated municipality as well as Prefecture in Greece, it has 48 municipalities and is divided into 7 municipal districts. The Piraeus prefecture and the Athens prefecture forms the Athens-Piraeus super-prefecture. Athens is the birth place of the Olympics. The capital of Greece also offers a wide range of entertainment, such as the night life of Athens is very interesting especially the "bouzoukia" which are names given to the nightclubs, apart from that there are numerous theaters as well. Athens is not only the Country capital, it is also the Regional seat, Prefecture capital, and contains the Town hall as well.

The concept of democracy was introduced in Athens, and the entire concept came into being because at that time right after the end of a tyrannical rule there were two competing powers for the government of Athens; Cleisthenes who strategically tried to win the confidence of the lower classes and Isagoras. Isagoras was notoriously named the friend of the tyrants by Greek philosopher Aristotle, as he won a small battle and in the process won himself the position of an Archon ( meaning ruler or the holder of a public office and it is derived from the same root as monarch, hierarchy and anarchy). However Isagoras used the help of a Spartan called Cleomenes to expel Cleisthenes, the plan failed because along with Cleisthenes he tried to evict almost seven hundred families from Athens. Thus this action of Isagoras rendered him the loser of the battle because the Athenian public revolted and Cleisthenes became the ruling power. He introduced democracy as a matter of tact but eventually it became the way of government. Therefore Cleisthenes was the pioneer of democracy, a new political system and order which originated in Athens. The reformations thus made Athens a leading power of the Greek world. A unique feature of this government was that the Athenians had a right to ostracize any body who acquired too much wealth or power on order to avoid tyranny among them. The Athenians had taken an oath to live a life in a way that nobody could achieve too much influence. Greece is a country of 12.000 coastline miles and with almost 15.000 islands. Greece is where the western and eastern cultures meet, it is where the Olympic Games originated and it is the land of mythical gods.
