  1. Religion: The majority, nearly 98% of the Greek population belong to the Orthodox Church and the rest (1.3%) consist of Jews, Roman Catholics and Muslims. Orthodoxy is the national religion in Greece and is integral to life in Greece, due to the country's historical past.
  2. Language: The Greek language not only involves words, however the local athenians use lot of gestures to communicate. Therefore speaking in Greek does not only mean using a language but it also involves body language. English is understood by some people in Greece.
  3. Tipping Rules: Tipping after a meal at a diners should start at 15% to 20 % of the bill, however do make sure that the tip is served in cash only. In addition to waiters in the restaurants, Public toilet attendants in Athens should also be tipped. However, Taxi drivers, chambermaids and hotel porters need not necessarily be tipped, however it will be kind gesture on your part if you do.
  4. Tourist Information: To obtain tourist information in Athens you can visit EOT offices also known as Ellinikos Organismos Tourismou which has extensive information such as tourist information, maps, brochures, transport information, literature and general Athens tourism information. The main EOT office is at Amerikis Street in Athens,the other places are privately owned travel agencies or even municipal tourist offices including National Tourist Organisation of Greece.
  5. Vat Rules: Visitors who have to pay VAT on the goods purchased by them can actually claim the money back on purchases made for more that 117 euros, privided that their period of stay does not exceed 3 months, this can be achieved by filling in a tax free form from the shop of purchase and has to be presented to the customs while leaving the country.
  6. Currency: The Euro is the currency that as put into effect from 2001, although the old currency is not accepted it can be converted in the Central banks.
